Mini-event: Awakening 4
Who: Minoru, ensemble NPC cast.
Where: The Lab.
When: Monday, May 1st.
What: The Call comes again.
The summons came this time at the end of kyudo -- a day with no captain, it seemed, and with Golden Week, all but the most dutiful or devoted were less than inclined to keep up their practice, especially without the magnetism of their captain keeping them there. Indeed, several members had already departed to start the Golden Week festivities early.
Which meant that relatively few were there to notice a rather nondescript staff member drop in, summon Suzuki Minoru to the main meeting hall, and practically vanish before he could be questioned.
Had Mirai been there, he might have recognized the pattern. Perhaps it was fortunate for all involved that he was not.

"This is a world parallel to ours, where the laws of time and space differ. This is an artificially-created safe space, but there are creatures elsewhere that are trying to enter our world to prey on us. Fighting them with our technology is hazardous and largely ineffective, but some people have the ability to fight these beings on their terms. You are one of them."
She reached within her suit jacket and produced what appeared to be a simple wakizashi hilt, lacking both guard -- which was not unusual -- and a blade -- which was. Thin lines of ethereal blue light ran along both sides.
And with the push of a small recessed button, a blade of blue fire leapt to life from the end.
She offered the strange weapon to him hilt-first, wordlessly, without the usual query. There was no need to ask if he trusted them; the answer was already clear.

He held the blade given to him. And here, there was no awe...
No sense of self-importance. No small-voiced: 'Me?', 'What do you mean one of them?' He took it all for granted, and simply examined the blade that was given to him for a moment. Which was the one moment when Yachiyo saw something in the boy that wasn't immediate obedience, adolescent curiosity, or anything similar.
It was brief, it appeared in passing, and it was subdued compared to his obedience. A sort of... comfort, with the idea of holding a sharp object in his hands. If his speech had seemed natural before, like he'd practiced the idea often, this was... none too different.
"Thank you. I'm sure this will be useful in whatever task you have at hand for me," he said politely, and with indubitable honesty. "What do you require me to do with this?"

"Seppuku seyo."

He arched upwards, gaping, eyes wide-- and whether it was a painful shock, a pleasant one, or a mixture of both was hard to tell. The boy's eyes were lost to nothing-- to looking within, from whence something came.
That something was behind him, though he needed not look at it.
There was darkness, which looked pretty gleaming compared to what lurked inside of it. Teeth. These were the teeth that every human could recognize because they were written into the collective, unconscious memory as the last pair of teeth you wanted to see, and quite literally, the last you saw. A long row on a reptilian-like face, indistinct in the shadows, but dressed in a most regal, impure mane, which gleamed just a little red under the light, in stark contrast with its sickly yellow eyes. The figure had a leonine body, and claws, oh what white claws it had, they stood out in the dark pit that it emerged from. It was, however, bound... wrapped in chains that it didn't seem the least bit annoyed about, but in fact, it seemed to enjoy them, with a Chesire twist to its grin. Its chest was metallic-- and patterned with a bad-relief chrysanthemum seal. Its back side was that of a best ready to pounce, and when it opened its mouth it made a sound like a nest of angry hornets. It was possible that, if you looked inside the mouth, you might actually see them, giving the idea the beast was full of them...
But then it vanished.
"Ah..." he said, a bit sweaty now, and startled by what he felt, what he saw, eyes still with a hundred yard look for a moment.

"... Thank you for your cooperation."
The swirl of colors and bizarre, unpleasant sensations faded, leaving behind only the lab, in steel and chrome and almost too-bright white.
"That was the shinmen, a sort of guardian spirit that will allow you to fight those creatures when the need arises. It can only exist in this world, and that device will only function here as well.
"Effective immediately, you will be transferred from your specialty class to Critical Thinking in the 1-ho homeroom. Training will not take place every day, but it will be frequent. Your main contact point outside of class will be Horaoku. If you have any medical concerns, see Ishichi in the nurse's office. For any stress or mental concerns, see the counselor, Sekimiya. You will be given priority over the rest of the student body in both cases.
"You are excused from club activities today and all classes tomorrow. If you feel any lingering effects beyond that, see Ishichi for testing and an absence note."
The speech was clearly canned to some extent, but she paused at this point and regarded Suzuki with an appraising look. "There is one other task I have for you going forward."

His mind was a mess for a moment. A moment when every instinct of his ego and super ego fought for control-- and succeeded in repressing the urge to smile like a crescent moon for a moment.
The self overcame the persona, and, with a polite bow, he said in an even, though increasingly earnest tone: "Thank you. I will use my time to recover to prepare for my duties for the nation!" A promise he followed by looking up. "Yes, sensei? What do you need of me?" he said.
For the time being, it seemed the beast was leashed, and entirely eager to serve his purpose.

"We have recruited others with the shinmen capability, but not all of them are as... eager to perform their duties as you are. I'm not concerned about hearing a few complaints, but if the situation worsens, I'll be relying on you to help keep them in line.
"I'm sure I don't need to tell you," she added firmly, "that they are not to know about this assignment."
no subject
"Surely they don't know or understand the importance of our service to the nation, with these grand guardian spirits-- ours is a greater responsibility than others', then. I'll do my best to help them understand... should they show such disregard for their duties. And yes, they will not be told of my assignment."
He paused briefly. "May I ask a question?"

Pleasantly.

"... I'll take it under consideration."
